Winston Joseph - Woodcarver

Winston Joseph is a Jamaican woodworker and master carver from the cool hills of St. Mary, where a lifetime of craftsmanship is woven into the landscape he calls home. Now 58 years old, Winston has spent more than 35 years transforming native woods into timeless handcrafted pieces that celebrate Jamaica’s natural beauty and rich woodworking traditions.

Working primarily with cedar root wood, his preferred material for its exceptional strength, durability, and distinctive grain, Winston hand-carves each bowl, platter, sculpture, and decorative piece with remarkable patience and skill. Rather than disguising the wood’s natural character, he embraces its knots, flowing grain, and organic contours, ensuring that every creation is as individual as the tree from which it came.

His open-air workshop perches on the hillside beside his home, tucked behind the small country shop operated by his wife, Shirley. There, surrounded by cool mountain breezes and lush greenery, husband and wife work side by side in a partnership that is as much a part of each piece as the wood itself. As Winston carves in his hillside studio, Shirley sits in front of her shop carefully hand-sanding the finished pieces, giving each one the satin-smooth finish that has become a hallmark of their work. Their shared dedication transforms every carving into a labour of love, shaped by Winston’s skilled hands and completed with Shirley’s careful touch.

When he is not at his carving bench, Winston tends his farm, where he grows yellow yam, plantain, banana, and peas. His close connection to the land is reflected in every piece he creates—honest, enduring, and deeply rooted in Jamaica’s traditions.

Together, Winston and Shirley have created more than a workshop; they have built a hillside retreat where craftsmanship, family, and nature exist in harmony. Every piece that leaves their hands carries not only the beauty of Jamaican wood, but also the warmth of their partnership and the peaceful spirit of the St. Mary hills.
