Michael - Layne - Ceramist

Michael Layne is a Jamaican ceramic artist, educator, and master craftsman whose work reflects a deep appreciation for the island's artistic heritage and natural environment. Born in Portland, Jamaica, he studied ceramics at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts before earning a Master's degree in Art Education through The Ohio State University. He has dedicated much of his career to both creating ceramic art and inspiring future generations as an art educator.

Working primarily with hand-built clay forms, Layne creates sculptural vessels, bowls, bottles, and decorative works distinguished by their organic silhouettes, richly textured surfaces, and earthy glazes. His pieces celebrate the beauty of handcrafted ceramics while drawing inspiration from Jamaica's landscapes, architecture, and cultural traditions.

A founding member of the Association of Jamaican Potters, Layne has exhibited widely throughout Jamaica and internationally. His work has been featured by the National Gallery of Jamaica, included in major exhibitions such as the Jamaica Biennial, and is represented in notable collections, including the CB Facey Foundation Collection. Through both his studio practice and teaching, Michael Layne continues to play an important role in the advancement of contemporary Jamaican ceramics.
