Leonia McKoy - Ceramist

Leonia McKoy is a Jamaican ceramic artist whose work explores the expressive potential of clay through form, movement, and balance. Though she cannot pinpoint the exact moment art became her life’s calling, she has always been immersed in a world of images that demand transformation into three-dimensional form. Clay, her primary medium, is both tactile and versatile, allowing her to create sculptural works that invite touch, evoke emotion, and visually engage the spaces they inhabit.

McKoy’s ceramics go beyond surface aesthetics. Her practice is rooted in the creation of harmony—using flowing lines, organic shapes, and rhythmic forms to engage the senses and stir the spirit. Each piece is designed to interact with its environment, offering moments of reflection, warmth, and quiet inspiration.

Born in 1979 in St. Andrew, Jamaica, McKoy’s artistic foundation was shaped at Wolmer’s High School for Girls, where she was nurtured by a strong visual arts program. She later attended the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, where she discovered her true artistic language in ceramics. The medium’s limitless possibilities continue to fuel her creative exploration and innovation.

In 2001, McKoy graduated with honors, receiving the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Diploma Student at the School of Visual Arts. Her acclaimed Butterfly series received a Gold Medal in the JCDC Fine Arts Competition, further establishing her as one of Jamaica’s leading contemporary ceramic artists.

Since then, she has built a distinguished career creating ceramic statement pieces for residential, corporate, and institutional spaces, as well as bespoke executive gifts. Her work is held in notable collections including the Bank of Jamaica, Bank of Nova Scotia, Sagicor, Guardian Life, and other local and international institutions.

Through her ceramics, Leonia McKoy seeks to uplift the spirit, transform spaces, and offer enduring works that resonate with meaning, beauty, and soulful presence.
